Our History

St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, 1940’s (Hamilton Public Library)

Welcome to the website of St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral, the original cathedral Church of the Diocese of Hamilton.

The present church replaced the original St. Mary’s, a smaller wooden structure, built in 1838. This original church was designated the cathedral church of the newly formed Diocese of Hamilton in 1856 and was destroyed by fire in August, 1859.

With the tremendous efforts of Hamilton’s first Bishop, John Farrell, and the people of the diocese, the cornerstone of the present St. Mary’s was laid in early 1860 and the structure was completed later that year. Most of the work on the building was done by volunteer workers, already employed in the long working days of the era. The results of their labours attest to their dedication, skill, artistry and deep faith.

St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral, seat of the Bishop of Hamilton until 1927, has preserved most of its original pre-Confederation appearance and character and is considered one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and period interior decoration in Ontario. St. Mary’s is one of the architectural and heritage gems in this region of Ontario and Canada. The church has recently undergone an extensive exterior and interior refurbishment and the restoration of the many artistic treasures within.

Since its construction, St. Mary’s has welcomed and served successive groups of immigrants to this region of Canada. Many of today’s residents can trace their first ancestors in Canada back to St. Mary’s and its North End neighbourhoods. St. Mary’s was and continues to be a “first home” to new immigrant groups until they are able to establish parishes and communities reflecting their heritage. Today, St. Mary’s Parish consists of both a vibrant Portuguese community and an English speaking community from numerous origins and backgrounds. The wonderfully diverse Parish of today is a splendid and enriching example of harmony, peace and mutual respect for all.

St. Mary’s is officially recognized as an Ontario History and Heritage Site by the Government of Ontario.
